The Half-Term Escape
Posted on 03 October 2023
October half-term is on the approach and there are some lovely places to go if you are after some sun before the winter really sets in. Below are some of our favourite picks or places good to go at this time of year, what you can do and where to stay....
Lisbon
Where to stay: Hotel 1908
What to do: Take a stroll through the historic Alfama district, where winding alleys and charming plazas reveal centuries of history. Don't miss a visit to the iconic Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, to marvel at Manueline architecture. Enjoy breathtaking views from São Jorge Castle and explore the trendy neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Chiado for vibrant nightlife and shopping. Savor delicious Portuguese cuisine, including pastéis de nata (custard tarts) and fresh seafood, at local eateries. Finally, take a tram ride on Tram 28 to soak in the city's unique atmosphere. Lisbon is a city that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, making it an unforgettable destination.

Where to stay: Six Senses Zighy Bay
What to do: Arrive by speedboat, 4x4 or paraglider? And no, we are not joking and that is just the start. This hotel is situated in a stunning secluded spot where there is little sound but the lapping of waves however, if you need a little more than total tranquility, there is plenty to do to keep you busy. You can explore the rugged coast and its clear dark depths on a traditional dhow cruise or scuba-diving expedition; borrow snorkelling kit from the watersports centre and wade into the water just beyond your villa; play Pétanque or beach volleyball; practice yoga or Pilates, go waterskiing in adjacent bays, canyoning in rocky wadis, paragliding from the cliffs, mountain biking in the Hajar Mountains, hiking up goat paths, rock climbing or microlight flights. Further afield, Six Senses staff can also arrange Dubai day trips and 4x4 excursions to the ancient village and plateau of Sabatyn. Safe to say, there isn't much time to be bored if you that's not your thing.

Mauritius
Where to stay: The Constance Prince Maurice
What to do: Read, relax, swim, eat, repeat!! Our kind of heaven however, for those who aren't good at sitting still all day, there is plenty to keep you occupied from watersports straight off the beach to boat trips, tennis to golf on either of their two championship golf courses, market trips to day excursions, you certainly won't be bored. And when you come back from any activity, what better way is there to re-hydrate than in the pool bar. They also have the largest wine cellar in the Indian Ocean, three outstanding restaurants, one of which is floating. It really is a little slice of heaven.
